Camp Blood Commentary
Hello Readers,
So I decided to cover all of the middle chapters of this story (that's 4) so that when the final part goes up on Monday I can finish my commentary next Wednesday.
So without further ado...
Chapter 2
So Chapter 2 begins with the counselors all traveling to Camp Crystal Lake. The first six are all Bayview High School graduates with Ethan being the oldest of the group as he is portrayed as older than Jackson, Ramona, Popko. I realize that Rocki and Ethan know each other but it is not stated that they are the same age so I have him as older. The other two named counselors from the series are Lola Wong (who I seldom write in my stories) and Brady. I gave Brady a first name as Brady sounds like a better last name than a first (IMHO). There are other counselors but they are all unnamed and only mentioned a few times.
The first third of the story just introduces us to the 3 guys and 3 girls who are driving to Crystal Lake. Ashlyn was the girl from the Ghosted episode that became Ramona's friend.
Let me take a moment to point out that for my slasher fics that I don't feature Ramona in these situations. While I have no problem running Rocki through the grinder I have a harder time doing so to Ramona. It's just me... sorry.
Anyways, The teens arrive at camp and go through the meet and greet as well as orientation. Jackson only has to be at the meet and greet as his sole duty is the archery range. This helps him keep his distance from most of the management that know him from the previous massacre.
Jackson quickly notes the changes to the campground (more cabins, the barn has been moved), and while he took a look at the illustrated map while he was applying it is very unreal (and unnerving) for him to be back and see all of the changes and all of the buildings that are the same. Jackson attends the required events that Valerie asks him to. Jackson has managed to set up wifi cameras to the camp's rural network, a necessary addition after the events of the previous incident. The tech equipment to run the cameras was purchased with procured funds from the Camp budget that management has not discovered as the invoice was delivered during the final setup just before they opened.
Two plot points important to the later chapters were the hidden compartment in the floor and the mysterious black bag. This bag was Sienna's condition for not coming with Jackson. Something not seen again until much later.
Nothing interesting happens at dinner but late in the evening, the group plays Truth or Dare. I know it might seem a bit silly for older teens to do this but there is a whole horror movie based on this. Anyways, I used it as a means to give Jackson some interesting interaction with the counselors, particularly Rocki and Lola. If anyone thought that I would have Jackson pick Lola instead of Rocki you really don't know me that well. I did figure that based on the breakup alone that Jackson might still feel a little resentment towards Rocki so that is why he had her jump in the lake naked.
Coco and Rocki sneak into Jackson's cabin while he is out and manages to swipe the item that only Coco knows about while Rocki is standing guard outside. The readers still (as of this moment) don't know what's in the bag (but you probably suspect).
They hide the bag in the barn to see how long it will take Jackson to notice they are missing.
Upon his return, Jackson senses something is amiss on the campgrounds. Jackson is correct as the killer from the Prologue is hiding in the brush. We see the killer's thoughts and learn that they are patient.
Chapter 3
We time jump to August 13th.... FRIDAY the 13th! In case no one has noticed... a very BAD day!!! (Side Note: August 13th was a Friday this year.) Jackson and Popko start out putting the stuff away, they (well I) remind the readers that Jackson is dating Popko's ex (and he didn't ask if he minded) and the reader learns that Popko has developed a relationship with Lola at some point in time over the summer.
After everything is stowed for the season Jackson returns to the sanctuary of his cabin until he is joined by Coco. The pair are very close but only in a friendly way as Jackson is still deeply in love with Sienna while Coco is still sweet on her boyfriend. We have a short exchange between the two leading to the next scene.
Ben Willis and Valerie are leaving the camp upon all the campers departure to return the horses to the stable Willis got them from as he does not own them (not cost effective). This also served as a way to remove them from the kill list. Ben has a flashback to his return the Saturday after the massacre and how he found each of the bodies of his murdered counselors, the murdering waitress and the two surviving counselors. The other part of this departure scenario is that the unnamed northern counselors are also leaving in short order.
This leaves us with the primary cast members.... and a cookout. This starts with a nice scene between Jackson and Rocki as Rocki notes that Jackson is a bit distracted. Jackson remember cooking for his co-workers the last day of their life... but does not open up to Rocki on the grounds the topic depresses him (as it should) and he doesn't want to ruin it for everyone else.
The trouble begins when Ethan and Ashlyn (who also started dating earlier in the summer) are going off to have a picnic by themselves. During the meal Brady brings a guest from one of the lakehomes, Gina DeWitt, Sienna's archrival (last seen in Senior Prom). Paxton is not around and Gina is currently having a summer fling with Brady (an older guy). Gina pulls Brady away to his cabin thus splitting 3 counselors off from the group still on sight.
The killer analyses his options and selects Ethan and Ashlyn as they are farther away from the group. The couple selected the same spot as the the quartet from Prologue to have a picnic. The unseen killer takes out Ethan (but we don't see his final moments) and Ashlyn escapes though the foliage almost in view of the Range cabin. Ashlyn hits a tripwire and she is killed by a booby trap.
Chapter 4
This chapter picks up in the evening almost at dinner time. Jackson and Coco are still cooking but they are in the company of Bret Willis. Jackson is wearing his large dark glasses and a hat to mask his appearance. Ben and Bret have never seen Jackson without these two items and Jackson has managed to keep away from them whenever possible, even flat out avoiding them if the weather was bad and his hat and glasses weren't viable. However with the old fashioned stove in his cabin he could easily cook his own meal if need be.
Rocki and Coco manage to convince Bret that Jack (Jackson's alias) is always like this and it is nothing personal. After dinner the counselors are putting everything away as there is only one more meal left. Jackson worries as Lola reminds him that Ethan and Ashlyn have not returned yet. This reminds Jackson of the previous summer camp when John did not return for dinner. The incoming storm also reminds Jackson of that same night.
Running into Rocki he asks her to get Coco and barricade themselves into a cabin for the night. Rocki is not completely swayed but Jackson telling her that he still cares for her and that he cares what happens to her. As he doesn't want anything bad happening to her she acquiesces to his concerns and plans to do just that.
Going back to his cabin, Jackson changes into dark BDU's and collects Mike's bow that has been in the cabin for three years. He then heads into the area that Ashlyn and Ethan last traveled to in the hopes of finding them.
We then shift to Gina and Brady (post lunch scene) who are engaging in sexual activities. They stop to rest for some time and Brady collects dinner which will be their last meal. The two return to their sexual activities which are eventually interrupted by the arrival of the killer. We get the first major descriptive feature of the killer after Gina is bisected amid her sexual climax when Brady sees a white hockey mask on the killer as his head is split at the mouth by an E-Tool.
Chapter 5
So this chapter reveals my killer, Jason Voorhees. Yes I actually used him in my fic.
Jason then makes his way through the cabins checking for the counselors still on sight. Starting slowly at first until he crashes through the last cabin. Except for Jackson and Bret, the 4 remaining counselors are in the Main Hall. Coco and Rocki are sent to find the others. Jason makes his way into the Main Hall and first brutally kills Popko and then attacks and gravely injures Lola.
At the exact same moment, Rocki and Coco are discovering the fate of the missing counselors. Coco discovers Ethan and Ashlyn while Rocki discovers Gina and Brady and the chapter ends in screams.
